Exploring Solid Surface Finishes for Reception Desks

Choosing the right finish for a reception desk depends on the space's design, budget, and practical requirements. From laminate and timber veneer to metal, stone, porcelain, and glass, many materials are available, each offering different benefits.

One popular option is solid surface, valued for its seamless appearance, durability and design flexibility. Although often associated with Corian®, the market has evolved significantly, with brands such as Durasein, HI-MACS, Staron and Hanex now offering an extensive range of colours, patterns and specialist finishes.

Understanding the options available, and how they differ, can help you select a reception desk material that meets your aesthetic and practical requirements.

What Is a Solid Surface Material?

Solid surface is a manufactured material made from a combination of mineral fillers, resins and pigments. Its durable, non-porous finish and design flexibility make it a popular choice for premium reception desks.

Unlike natural stone, solid surface can be joined using specialist adhesives to create an almost seamless appearance, even across larger or more complex designs. Many products can also be thermoformed, using heat to create curves, rounded corners and distinctive shapes.

It has a smooth, non-porous surface which is easy to clean, making it particularly suitable for healthcare and dental environments. Minor scratches and marks can often be removed through sanding and refinishing, helping extend the material's lifespan.

What Solid Surface Brands Are There?

Corian® is probably the most well-known solid surface brand, but it is by no means the only one available.

As the market has grown, manufacturers have introduced new colour ranges, different finishes, and new fabrication methods. The choices available have therefore increased.

At Clarke Rendall, we deal with a variety of solid surface materials. The following are some of the brands that we work with:

Corian® – an established choice with specialist finishes

Corian, one of the best-known solid surface brands, offers a wide range of colours and patterns, from classic whites to natural-stone imitations. Corian's specialist DeepColour™ Technology helps reduce the visibility of whitening when a surface is scratched, making it a good option for high-end reception desks with black or dark finishes.

Durasein – creative finishes and customisation

One of the newest brands to enter the UK solid surface market, Durasein offers a wide and continually developing range of solid colours, stone-inspired patterns and modern decorative finishes. With competitive pricing across its range, it is an attractive option for designing a reception desk that matches the brand identity or interior design scheme while staying within budget.

HI-MACS – flexibility for complex designs

HI-MACS is especially well suited to projects involving curves and complex shapes, as it can be thermoformed to a tight radius. Together with its wide variety of colours and finishes, this offers further possibilities for designing sculptural reception desks and intricate detailing.

Staron – decorative finishes and curved forms

Staron provides a wide variety of decorative effects, such as patterns inspired by natural stone in its Supreme range and translucent finishes in selected Tempest finishes. You can shape the material into curves and seamless designs, and it has a smooth, non-porous surface.

Hanex – decorative choice and environmental options

Hanex provides a wide variety of colours and decorative finishes, some of which are inspired by contemporary stone. Selected products contain recycled content that has been independently verified, and since it has documented technical and performance credentials, Hanex's products are worth considering in commercial, healthcare and educational settings.

Although these brands share many characteristics, differences in finishes, fabrication requirements, availability and cost can influence which is most suitable. It is worth exploring several options to find a material that meets the design, practical requirements and budget of your reception desk.

Where Does Solid Surface Work Best?

Solid surface is commonly used in commercial settings, especially where durability, hygiene, or design flexibility are important.

In healthcare and dental practices, smooth, non-porous surfaces support regular cleaning while creating a welcoming, professional appearance.

Working alongside Hague Dental, Clarke Rendall manufactured a bespoke curved reception desk for Pure Periodontics, finished in Staron Pebble Swan solid surface. The project demonstrates how the material can be used to create distinctive curved designs while delivering a smooth, practical finish suited to a dental environment.

At Kean Street in London, Clarke Rendall manufactured a bespoke, split-level reception desk featuring sweeping curves and HI-MACS® Andromeda solid surface, combined with quarter-cut oak veneer and antique brass detailing. The project demonstrates how solid surface can be used to create distinctive, complex forms while combining contemporary design with the character of a historic setting.

Educational settings can also benefit from solid surface, particularly in high-footfall reception areas, student services counters, and shared facilities where ease of maintenance is important.

Choosing The Right Material for Your Reception Desk

With so many finishes available, selecting the right material should be part of the wider reception desk design process.

While solid surface offers many advantages, other materials, including laminate and timber veneer, may be more suitable depending on the design, budget and practical requirements.

At Clarke Rendall, we work with architects, interior designers, fit-out contractors and businesses to explore material options and develop reception desks that meet their individual requirements.

Whether you have a detailed specification or are still exploring the possibilities, our team can help you compare finishes and create a reception desk that works for your space.
